Where Minneapolis started. East Hennepin, Main Street and the river.
Old Town is where Minneapolis began. The village of St. Anthony grew up here beside the falls in the 1840s, years before there was a city across the river. Today it is a compact, walkable district on the east bank of the Mississippi. Surdyk's, Nye's and Kramarczuk's anchor East Hennepin. Main Street runs along the river on cobblestones, past restaurant patios and out to the Stone Arch Bridge.
Chute Square, across from Lunds & Byerlys on University, is the neighborhood's gathering place. It holds the Ard Godfrey House, the fall festival and the dog parade. The Old Town Business Association hosts a monthly business forum, neighborhood happy hours and a weekly block club walk, and new restaurants keep opening along the corridor.
Condo buyers get real range here. Riverfront towers like La Rive, The Falls and The Pinnacle sit near lofts and townhomes at Village Lofts and Lourdes Square. Downtown is a short walk across the Hennepin Avenue Bridge. The breweries and studios of the Northeast Arts District are a few minutes north by bike or bus.
